While there are many, many Kratom strains available today, Maeng Da is quite well known for it’s higher alkaloid content. As a reminder, the Kratom plant contains two main compounds (alkaloids), mitragynine & 7-hydroxymitragynine, among many others. It was intently created as a higher potency strain, said to be a ‘level up’ in comparison to the other varieties available.
Honestly, the jury is still out on Maeng Da Kratom – There’s a large portion of experienced people in the Kratom community who feel that Maeng Da is great, but it’s truly not for everyone. It packs a punch, and is an incredibly potent strain. It’s also often referred to as ‘Pimp Grade’, if that gives you a better idea of the potency it holds.

Why Thailand? Great question. As mentioned, that warm air & rich soil help to create the perfect environment for the Mitragyna Speciosa tree to flourish. There are tons of farmers in Thailand who experience Kratom growing right in their backyard! For hundreds of years, this has given opportunity and income to these farmers and workers, and it remains a very important plant in their society.
While Kratom has been used for hundreds of years, it’s really gained traction worldwide in the past decade or so. It’s primarily sold for educational purposes today, and there is a significant amount of advocacy for further research on the plant. Regardless of its use, farmers and manufacturers in Thailand see this as a very lucrative plant & industry (because it is), but have weathered many regulations, laws, and potential bans over time.
Consistent with every strain, once the Mitragyna Speciosa tree’s leaves have ripened, they’re meticulously harvested by hand by Kratom farmers. Timing really is everything for these leaves, and there’s a unique method that the experts have figured out to ensure each strain is precisely ready for next steps.
Once the batch of leaves has been collected, they’re then cleansed of any dirt and contaminants through a thorough wash cycle. Nothing special is used here, just clean, pure, running water. They don’t sit in the water for an extended period of time, it’s just enough to ensure they’re cleansed and ready to cure.
After the leaves have been washed, they’re then carefully placed on drying racks for ‘curing’. Depending on the batch (and the farmer’s preference), the leaves can be placed either inside, or outside, directly in the sun. Also depending on the batch of Kratom, the amount of time that the leaves spend in this stage can vary. For Maeng Da Thai Kratom, the leaves spend more time drying than an average batch of Kratom. This is to ensure that the desired potency for Maeng Da is achieved. This requires a more mature batch of leaves.
Grinding is typically the last stage before packaging & shipping. Once the farmers have dried the leaves to their preference, the veins are then removed.Here, most Maeng Da Kratom farmers utilize a commercial grade grinding machine to achieve the fine powder that is purchased by customers. All Kratom powders are intended to be the same fine consistency, so there’s not much variance in this stage of the process.
Once farmers have achieved the fine powder substance, they then package the Kratom in securely sealed, airtight product packaging according to weight, and it’s ready to ship! There are particular Kratom strains that are taken through a secondary fermentation process, which increases the alkaloid presence and provides an even more potent product. These are considered ‘super enhanced’ Kratom products. Because Maeng Da Kratom Powder is already one of the more potent strains, it does not undergo this unique secondary fermentation step.
